I absolutely adore Gumma kokeshi ! I love their dreamy expressions, and kimonos painted with colorful images of the seasons, the elements, and nature. Each kokeshi has a unique atmosphere and a personality of it's own. The warmth and smoothness of the wood gives a pleasant, relaxing feeling. Gumma kokeshi are special because down through the years their design has developed with a freedom not seen in kokeshi from other prefectures.
Last year when my friend came to visit I took her to the Usaburo Kokeshi factory in Nagaoka.@The drive there through the Gumma countryside in May was wonderful. We spent a lovely afternoon wandering around the factory. We were able to watch how the dolls are carved from wood on the lade, and painted by hand. We were impressed by the skill of the craftspeople and the long tradition of the craft. My friend immediately fell in love with the beautiful wooden dolls, who she said looked as if they were standing in a dream. She found it difficult to choose which one to buy and ended up using her credit sard to buy as many Kokeshi as she could carry because she couldn't bare to leave the one's she liked behind.
I recommend anyone interested in art and crafts to visit the UsaburoKokeshi factory. Gumma Kokeshi are a unique combination of nature, art and tradition.
